WIP - Work in Progress

Let me ask you... Do you like seeing unfinished artworks?

Does it interest you to see how people work and you believe it’s great to see sketches, even if they’re still all doodly and rough? Well, if you answered at least one (or maybe all?) questions with “yes”, then this part right here is just perfect for you!

Here you can see some mixed WIP pictures of drawings I am currently working on - some are newer, some are a little older.  (Unless it's clearly specified, these are all characters from my own written projects.)

I will update this section every now and then and remove or add new pictures to this little gallery.

(And i f you'd like to see even more unfinished works however, why not take a look at some blog articles I wrote? Right below the thumbnails you can see just that - articles that contain or focus on WIPs.)

Have fun browsing! :)

Miscellaneous WIPs:

The leaves begin to fall...

...Which means, autumn is here at last! Some of you may be sad that summer is over (and some, especially some of my German readers may ask “Which summer?  You mean those last rainy months with temperatures that were way too cold for this time? That wasn’t summer.” ) but let me tell you: I love fall!

To me it’s the most beautiful of seasons – with the trees all painted in different colors and Halloween (and my Birthday in early October XD) just around the corner, it’s no surprise I enjoy it, hm?

And since the new season deserves a celebration, why not do so with some sneak peaks on some of the drawings I’ve been working on recently? Do you think this sounds good? Well, then why not take a look?

But first let me tell you – the leaves outside aren’t the only things that’s been raining down upon my head recently: I’ve been going through some old boxes stacked with papers and old magazines from about ten to fifteen years ago and my, did I find a lot of...Odd things.
I threw away a lot (well, most of it), but I also found and kept some weird old exercise sheets. I suppose you aren’t surprised to hear that most of them were doodled on. It was a weird feeling to see my old scribbles again but it was necessary to clean up because I got a few new shelves for my room. (Now my Manga are finally all properly lined up and my collection of Action Figures got a worthy place in a glass display case ^_^).
Anyway, enough of this off-topic mumbling, on to business! *Straightens her imaginary white gloves*

The drawings I promised!
Here, let me show you – and if you are interested in some details behind those drawings (as for example who these characters are if you don’t know them or some other background information),  simply scroll down.

  • First up a painting I’ve been meaning to show you for a while – although I must admit that this is a bit of a “teaser” picture. Why? You’ll see why in a second.
It’s a painting of an in fact minor character of my novel “Broken” – he’s a darkelven archer called Nadeis, but since he’s become quite dear to me, I tend to draw him more than the other secondary characters. The painting is not yet done, but I do plan on working on it more, as I like where this is going.
I’ve been planning to make a detailed article on this one – a making of article, if you will, describing the various steps in a more detailed manner. I still plan on doing this soon though (I've even prepared the article a bit already), so look out for my updates on this blog. :)

  • The second painting is one of two remakes, although the sketch for this one isn’t that old yet – it’s a pencil sketch of my character Gabryel I did last year in school.
I loved this sketch so much though that I’ve been wanting to create a painting based on it and started working on it a while back, but got stuck on the background and stopped. At that time I had already placed some base coloring for Gabryel, but had not done any shading yet. So a few days ago, I’d been feeling a little blue and had not been able to really draw much... So the mood struck me to work on it and this is how it looks so far – not too shabby, huh? I know it still needs a lot of work, but I already like how it’s expressing the atmosphere I’ve been aiming for. Once I make any progress on this (or even finish it) I may show you the result, stay tuned!

  • And the last painting for today, yet another picture of Nadeis, is a small treasure to me. As it says in the painting itself: it’s from 2007 – that is, the whole background, the lineart and the basecoloring (and what little shading I had done on the Nadeis’ face) was done in that year.
Considering it’s seven years old I still quite like it (especially since this picture, unlike other sketches and drawings I did in 2007, comes rather close to my style today) and found it a shame it remained unfinished - but I also realized, if I were to continue it, I’d have to change it a little because my style DID change. So, just a few days ago I asked myself: why not give it another try? No sooner said than done: I made a new layer above my old line art, quickly re-sketched the nose and began painting away. I realized that especially the large eyes were bothering me, so I completely re-painted them as well. The painting is also still  a work in progress, but unlike the other Nadeis painting, I’m not too sure yet when I’ll continue this one. I do wish to finish it some day though – especially since it’s one of the rare paintings I did that shows some scenery of the land of my darkelves, complete with it’s blossoming trees that bloom in the everlasting night. *sighs* How I wish to paint more of it...

In any case – this is all for now.

I hope you enjoyed to see those WIPs! As always, feel free to leave a comment.

That one, mischievous grin...

Loki in "Journey Into Mystery #94" Copyright Marvel ©1952

... makes me smile in malicious glee whenever I see it.

As you know and as I've told you, I've been reading some Thor Comics recently. I've added "Heaven and Earth" & #94 of "Journey Into Mystery" to my collection now (and ordered "The Trials of Loki" yesterday *can't wait to read it*) and learned that nothing makes me giggle in delight, as much as Loki's evil grin. Seriously, whenever he makes an appearance I can't help but smile...

Thus, I ended up deciding to give it a try to draw just that grin of his - in my own style, inspired by Loki from the movies and the comics.

It started yesterday evening - tired as I was I just laid back on my bed and read the last few pages of "The Godstorm", kind of wishing Thor would lose for once and Loki would win - I mean you must admit, tricking the storms so they no longer obey Thor's command was a smart plan to begin with. I must have dozed off though, because the next thing I remember was seeing Loki being victorious, grinning his cute little grin.

"Wow" I thought as I woke "This was one wonderful expression." o//.//o And before I realized what I was doing I grabbed my tablet and began doodling a sketch of Loki. It was really just a rough doodle, just for fun, but I ended up liking it so much, that I started coloring it while watching Thor: The Dark World for the... Umpteenth time *laughs* So far I've only been adding colors underneath the sketch (which was turned down to a lower opacity), but once I blocked in all colors, I'm going to paint over the sketch layer.

Are you interested in seeing that painting? Well, that's good, because I just planned on sharing it! Once I'll finish the painting, I'll post it, of course :3 For now here's the sketch and some WIP pictures though.

Let me know what you think!

Two weeks of "Vacation in Midgar"

It’s been about two weeks ever since my last entry here and there’s so much to tell about – so much that it’s getting hard to decide where to start.

Maybe I should start with mentioning that I haven’t been home for the last two weeks – I had some... Let’s say quarrels with my family, so I decided it was for the best if I stayed away from home for a little while.

Luckily I have a very good friend (*waves* hello Asaka! Yes, I mean you!) who made this possible for me and who allowed me to stay at her place (oh, and also thanks to her boyfriend for bearing with me for two weeks *laughs* XD).

But I have to admit – I enjoyed the past weeks. Though I still had to go to work (an internship) every day, it still felt as though I was on vacation. Although I’m a little sad to be home again now, there’s also some things here that I missed a lot.

Still, I had fun to escape the usual daily routine for a little while and to spend my days a little different. I’m especially glad I could just be the crazy old me again – for example I often started to speak English in the middle of a German sentence, just for fun, or I also allowed myself to laugh about nonsense (what was that about “Kupopo”, Asaka? XD).

But what made me most happy that I finally got the chance again to focus a little more on Final Fantasy VII. In the previous weeks I concentrated my work on my novel, which of course, made me happy too, but as summer then really struck cologne and it made me suffer with it’s high temperatures, it got as good as impossible to work creatively. And so, being unable to draw and write, I felt that something was.. Missing.

I don’t even know why, but as I packed my bag to move to Asaka’s place for a while, I also packed my PSP – along with Crisis Core. I had not played this game in ages because I stopped playing it back then for certain reasons... But I kind of felt like starting over and re-played the game from scratch.
Soon all I could talk about was Sephiroth – Sephy here, Sephy there, “oh look, Asaka, it’s Sephiroth *u*”. Soon Asa and I also ended up watching Advent Children over and over *laughs*.
What made me happy about that though was that I didn’t seem to bug Asaka with my weird behavior, on the contrary – she seemed to be just as excited and started playing Crisis Core again too, so we both even started to write about it together. And not just that, finally I had someone again I could discuss my theories about FFVII with again <3

We spent the whole night on Friday just to sit together and to draw, even though I had no clue yet, WHAT I was going to draw or if I could manage to do more than just a sketch, because the terrible summer heat really kept me from being artistic. Eventually I liked my sketch so much though that I started to color it.

What do you think of it so far? Hopefully I’m going  to finish it soon – if I do, I’ll show it to you of course ;)

Tales of Yokai - WIP

What you can see right here are some unfinished paintings of my story “Tales of Yokai”.
Some brief explanations:

1) Karasu – Kamen (Masks)
My crow yokai in his “costume” as human, disguised even further as an actor. He’s surrounded by Noh-Mask that symbolize the various characters of the story.

2) Seiichiro – On the Verge of Sanity
An illustration of my character Toru Seiichiro, a cursed samurai. He’s one of my most favorite characters of “Tales of Yokai” and I hope I’ll manage to finish this painting some time.

3) Toru Seiichiro – a “simple” Character Portrait
Well, that’s what it was supposed to be. But in the end it became quite the symbolic picture again. To name just one example: see that stormy, raging sea behind him? Its a symbol for his inner conflict.
